As a (former) theologian who is frequently frustrated with black church ethics, I believe deeply that black academia and the church would benefit from the ethical critiques you bring up.bekshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12405114431408955071noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7461703865983958582.post-27187308547483476592011-06-19T10:21:19.617-07:002011-06-19T10:21:19.617-07:00Ralph, great comment that is how I see it exactly....Ralph, great comment that is how I see it exactly.Gerard26noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7461703865983958582.post-61608124890773842232011-06-13T05:49:33.783-07:002011-06-13T05:49:33.783-07:00Excellent topic. I'm guessing one problem, at least as far as public intellectuals are concerned, is that black academics who deal with black subjects are socialized into the mode of being mediators between the black and white worlds, and in a defensive position regarding the former. The usual alternative to this are black conservatives funded by the right wing to attack other black people. There is a fundamental question of how anyone who doesn't fit an acceptable mode of stardom can become visible. Adolph Reed Jr. is a somewhat prominent black academic who has consistently attacks the black church & the corruption of black politics from the left, but is his name a household word? He doesn't address the public in the preacherly style of Cornel West or Michael Eric Dyson, nor is he a mainstream liberal like Henry Louis Gates, Jr.Ralph Dumainhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15886304779683587087noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7461703865983958582.post-47561110335278241492011-06-13T05:36:24.846-07:002011-06-13T05:36:24.846-07:00Wonderful piece! Additionally, the cultural contributions of secularist have either been ignored completely or their stories have been altered to include some Christianize reinterpretation of their identity. It's time that the truth about the humanist tradition within the Black community, particularly within scholarship and activism is told.DG Speakshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06102083385191534461noreply@blogger.com
